Northwest Africa 5472 (NWA 5472)

Purchased: 2008

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Breccia composed of sharply outlined, mostly rounded chondrules (mean diameter about 450 μm) and mineral fragments in abundant matrix predominantly composed of ferroan olivine. Olivine and low-Ca pyroxene in chondrules and as single mineral fragments are often compositionally unequilibrated. Minor phases include Ca-pyroxene, sodic plagioclase, Ti-bearing chromite, and sulfides; no metal detected. The meteorites contains up to 7 mm sized melt clasts.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa26.8±13.8 (Fa1.9-39.4, n=18); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs14.6±9.7Wo0.9±0.6 (Fs3.3-29.0Wo0.5-3.0, n=19); Ca-pyroxene: Fs10.2±1.8Wo42.9±4.3 (Fs8.5-14.4Wo32.5-46.5, n=8); feldspar: An8.4-13.4Ab85.1-89.5Or1.3-2.0, n=8; olivine in melt clasts: Fa34.5±2.1 (Fa30.8-36.3, n=18)
