Northwest Africa 14997 (NWA 14997)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3)

History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang in 2021 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed, separated chondrules containing devitrified glass (apparent diameter 510±310 µm, N = 24) together with some Type 3 lithic chondrite clasts are set in a fine grained matrix (~45 vol.%, deep orange in thin section) containing altered pentlandite (much replaced by Fe oxides), chromite and sodic plagioclase. Metal is absent.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa33.8±12.2, range Fa5.1-40.6, N = 9), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs21.9±3.9Wo0.8±0.6, range Fs17.8-27.2Wo0.1-1.6, N = 5), augite (Fs11.7±0.5Wo44.0±0.7, range Fs11.1-12.0Wo43.2-44.7, N = 4), plagioclase (Ab87.0An10.7Or2.3).

Classification: R3 chondrite.

Specimens: 17.7 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang.
