Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 15221 (NWA 15221)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3-5)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Chondritic breccia, consisting of cm-sized lithic clasts, embedded in clastic host material. The investigated lithic clast represents type 5 material (equilibrated olivine and pyroxene) with clearly visible chondrules. The host material (clastic matrix) consists mainly of related debris, but also contains unequilibrated chondrule fragments. Accessories are troilite and pentlandite; no metal was found.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Clasts of petrologic type 5: Mean olivine composition: Fa38.4±0.7 (Fa37.3-39.4); n=10; mean low-Ca pyroxene composition Fs29.7±0.8Wo1.8±1.2 (Fs Wo28.5-31.0); n=9; Selected chondrule fragments in the clastic matrix: Mean olivine composition: Fa16.7±6.2 (Fa2.4-21.8); n=11; mean low-Ca pyroxene composition Fs15.4±3.5 Wo0.3±0.3 (Fs12.4-23.8Wo0.0-0.9); n=6

Classification: R chondrite based on mineral chemistry in the type 5 clast. Genomict breccia (R3-5).
