Northwest Africa 5035 (NWA 5035)

Purchased: 2007

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3-6)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: Breccia composed of up to 8 mm sized mostly angular type 6 and black impact melt clasts in abundant type 3 host lithology. Dominant mineral phases in type 6 clasts are ferroan olivine and sodic plagioclase. Compositionally unequilibrated olivine and low-Ca pyroxene are most abundant in matrix chondrules (mean diameter about 500 µm) and among mineral fragments. In the matrix sodic plagioclase occurs mostly as small isolated grains. Opaque phases are pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and rare Ti-bearing chromite; metal is absent.

Geochemistry: type 3 lithology: olivine: Fa24.1±14.2 (Fa4.2-42.8, n=16); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs18.6±5.5Wo0.8±0.8 (Fs10.7-25.3Wo0.4-3.2, n=11); type 6 lithology: olivine: Fa37.5±0.4 (FeO/MnO=79±7, n=10); Ca-pyroxene: Fs11.2±1.6Wo43.7±3.2, (Fs9.3-13.6Wo39.0-46.8, n=10); feldspar: An11.7-20.6Ab77.7-86.2Or1.7-2.4, n=8
