Northwest Africa 5263 (NWA 5263)

Purchased: 2005

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3-6)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a Morrocan meteorite dealer on the meteorite fair in Ensisheim, France.

Physical characteristics: Three brownish fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a brownish to orange interior and is composed of up to 1 cm sized type 6 and black impact melt clasts set in type 3 matrix. Fe-rich olivine is the predominant mineral phase in the type 6 clasts. In the matrix, olivine and low-Ca pyroxene are mostly compositionally unequilibrated. Chondrules have an average diameter of about 450 μm. More minor phases include low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, sodic plagioclase, sulfides, and chromite; no metal has been detected.
