Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 13511 (NWA 13511) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2020 Aug Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R4) History: Purchased by Rachid Chaoui in August 2020 from a Mauritanian dealer. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed porphyritic and barred chondrules are set in a finer grained matrix containing sodic plagioclase, troilite and pentlandite (both exhibiting minor secondary alteration to Fe hydroxides). Metal is absent. Olivine has equilibrated compositions (except for rare more magnesian cores) whereas low-Ca pyroxene has a moderate compositional range. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa39.8±0.7, range Fa39.1-40.7, N = 4; magnesian core Fa15.9), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs21.4±8.2Wo1.6±1.3, range Fs15.0-30.6Wo0.6-3.1, N = 3), augite (Fs14.0±2.0Wo41.7±5.3, range Fs12.6-15.4Wo45.4-37.9, N = 2), plagioclase (An8.9Ab85.9Or5.2). Oxygen isotopes (K. Ziegler, UNM): analyses of acid-washed subsamples by laser fluorination gave, respectively, δ17O 5.597, 5.772, 5.651; δ18O 6.049, 5.963, 5.922; Δ17O 2.404, 2.624, 2.524 per mil (all data linearized). Classification: R4 chondrite. Specimens: 24.5 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. R. Chaoui. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
