Northwest Africa 14048 (NWA 14048)

Purchased: 2020 Dec

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R4)

History: Purchased by Tom Thiegs in December 2020 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Very fresh breccia composed of equilibrated Type 4 lithic clasts and related debris in a finer grained matrix. Lithic clasts have separated, well-formed chondrules within matrices containing accessory Ni-bearing pyrrhotite (with rare FePtAs inclusions), pentlandite and low-Ti chromite. Sulfides exhibit very minor secondary staining.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa39.1±0.2, range Fa38.9-39.3, N = 5), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs30.7±0.4Wo2.1±1.4, range Fs30.2-31.0Wo1.3-3.8, N = 3), augite (Fs11.8±0.5Wo44.9±0.7, range Fs11.2-12.2Wo44.2-45.6, N = 3), plagioclase in chondrule (An78.8Or1.4), plagioclase in matrix (Ab83.7An9.7Or6.6).

Classification: R4 chondrite breccia.

Specimens: 20.8 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. T. Thiegs.
