Northwest Africa 14237 (NWA 14237)

Purchased: 2021 Jun

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R4-6)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Talsint, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish rock with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite displays a fresh grayish interior and is a breccia composed of up to 3 mm sized angular to subrounded type 6 clasts in abundant type 4 host material consisting of chondrules and interchondrule matrix. Chondrules have an average diameter of about 450 µm. Ferroan olivine and sodic plagioclase are the most abundant mineral phases in all lithologies. Low-Ca pyroxenes are often compositionally unequilibrated in type 4 material. Opaque phases are troilite, pentlandite, and Ti-bearing chromite; metal is absent.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa38.0±0.3 (Fa37.6-38.4, n=13); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs29.7±0.2Wo2.2±0.4 (Fs29.3-29.9Wo1.6-2.8, n=10); Ca-pyroxene: Fs11.7±1.4Wo44.2±1.6 (Fs10.4-13.8Wo41.9-46.2, n=9); feldspar: An7.1-10.9Ab85.9-89.1Or1.6-4.1, n=11; type 4 lithology low-Ca pyroxene: Fs14.6±1.6Wo0.4±0.1 (Fs12.4-16.5Wo0.3-0.6, n=10)
