Saquia el Hamra, Western Sahara

Purchased: 2020

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3)

History: Nomads recovered the 142 g sample in the region between Jdirya and Afra Valley in Western Sahara. The sample was obtained by Zaid Oualguirah and subsequently sold to Jean Redelsperger in 2020.

Physical characteristics: Sample is partially coated in a dark brown flow-lined, regmaglypted fusion crust. The cut face shows the interior of the sample is dark brown in color and shows well-defined chondrules and sulfides.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample is a breccia composed of two different lithologies: A - clast composed of close-packed chondrules and fragments (avg. dia. 527 µm, n=41); B - host composed of dispersed (~20 vol%) chondrules (with an avg. dia 34 5µm, n=23) set within a recrystallized matrix (Fa39, n=6). Additional minerals: clinoenstatite, albitic plagioclase (from clast - 35.97 µm, n=11), pentlandite, troilite, chromite and apatite.

Geochemistry: Host: Olivine (Fa30.3±11.5, range Fa4.3-39.1, CV%=38, Cr2O3=0.1±0.1, NiO=0.1±0.1, Fe/Mn-80.4±11.9, n=17); low Ca pyroxene (Fs16.4±10.2Wo2.0±1.7, Fe/Mn=29.2±20.9, n=9), high Ca pyroxene (Fs13.9-19.7Wo44.2-30.4, Fe/Mn=14.6-61.4, n=2). Clast: Olivine (Fa36.2±1.4, Fe/Mn=75.9±2.8, n=12); low Ca pyroxene (Fs25.3±5.3Wo1.2±1.0, Fe/Mn=42.8±10.2, n=13).

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3-4, C-S2, wi-3). Magnetic susceptibility, chondrule diameters, mineral chemistry and textures suggest this is an R3-4 breccia.

Specimens: Jean Redelsperger holds the main mass. A slice weighing 21.34 g and a polished thin section are on deposit at App.
