Karpovka        48°40.11’N, 43°46.51’E

Volgogradskaya oblast’, Russia

Find: May 2007

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L5)

History: A single stone was found by S. B. Tarasov and P.A. Gordeev 8-10 km from the village of Karpovka in the Volgograd region. During a picnic, they had noticed an interesting stone in a small depression on the ground.

Physical characteristics: The meteorite has a dark-brown fusion crust and is slightly covered by iron hydroxides.

Petrography: (Ivanova M.A., Vernad): The meteorite consists of chondrules, chondrule fragments, and matrix. The chondrules range in size from 0.3 to 0.8 mm in diameter, averaging 0.65 mm. The chondrule margins are indistinct. The meteorite contains many textural types of chondrules including BO, PO, POP, and PP. The main minerals are olivine, pyroxene, FeNi-metal, sulfides, chromites and iron hydroxides.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Olivine Fa24.9; and orthopyroxene Fs22.0Wo1.5.

Classification: ordinary chondrite (L5), W2, S2.

Specimens: One sample of 71.6 g, three fragments of 3 g in total, and two thin sections are on deposit at Vernad. S. B. Tarasov and P.A. Gordeev hold the main mass of the meteorite.
