Northwest Africa 4924 (NWA 4924)

Purchased: 2007

Classification: Primitive achondrite (Winonaite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Brownish fragment with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows an equilibrated texture of typically 50 to 200 µm sized Mg-rich olivine, enstatite, augite, and sodic plagioclase grains. Triple junctions with 120° grain boundaries are abundant. Minor phases include chlorapatite, troilite and strongly altered FeNi metal.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa4.1±0.1 (Fa4.1-4.2, FeO/MnO=22±3, n=5); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs5.3±0.3Wo1.5±0.1 (Fs4.7-5.6Wo1.4-1.6, FeO/MnO=18±3, n=5); Ca-pyroxene: Fs2.3±0.1Wo45.1±0.2 (Fs2.1-2.3Wo44.8-45.3, FeO/MnO=15±2, n=5); feldspar: An2.3±1.9Ab94.1±1.7Or3.6±0.4, n=12
