Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14438 (NWA 14438)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Aug

Classification: Primitive achondrite (Winonaite)

History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang and Juan Chen in August 2021 from a dealer in Guelmim, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Protogranular assemblage (mean grainsize ~0.3 mm) of predominantly forsterite and enstatite with subordinate diopside and sodic plagioclase, plus accessory kamacite, taenite, chromite and apatite (both F-rich and Cl-rich varieties). The mafic silicates in this specimen are more ferroan than in other recently-classified winonaites, and the compositions of the halogen-bearing phosphates differ as well.

Geochemistry: Forsterite (Fa6.4-9.2, FeO/MnO = 12-15, N = 4), enstatite (Fs8.8-9.6Wo1.5-2.3, FeO/MnO = 10, N = 4), diopside (Fs4.4±0.0Wo44.5-44.8, FeO/MnO = 8-9, N = 2), plagioclase (Ab80.8-81.4An15.1-15.0Or4.1-3.6, N = 2).

Classification: Winonaite.

Specimens: 20.7 g including a polished endcut and one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang.
