Northwest Africa 14279 (NWA 14279) Algeria Find: 2021 Classification: Primitive achondrite (Winonaite) History: Purchased in 2021 by Adrián Contreras Gómez, Shun-Chung Yang, and Juan Chen from Ali Mustapha in Algeria. Physical characteristics: Sample contains visible fusion crust. Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample displays a granoblastic texture composed of forsterite, enstatite, augite, and sodic plagioclase grains meeting at 120° triple junctions (average silicate grain size ~ 260±50 µm). Large visible grains of Fe-Ni metal (up to 3 mm) are scattered across the sample along with accessory troilite and chlorapatite. Geochemistry: Forsterite (Fa3.5±0.3, range Fa2.8-3.8, FeO/MnO=19±4, n=11), Enstatite (Fs4.5±0.1Wo1.5±0.4, range Fs4.3-4.6Wo0.8-1.8, FeO/MnO=13±4, n=6), Augite (Fs1.4±0.2Wo44.6±0.4, range Fs1.0-1.7Wo44.1-45.3, FeO/MnO=14±3, n=7), Sodic Plagioclase (An20.6±0.6Or1.7±0.3, range An20.2-21.5Or1.3-2.1, n=6). Classification: Primitive achondrite (Winonaite). Specimens: 20.5 g and a thin section at NHMLAC; 176 g main mass with Adrián Contreras Gómez. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
