Hutchison Icefield 18026 (HUT 18026)        81°26.82500’S, 26°12.72800’W

Antarctica, Antarctica

Find: 2019 Jan 17

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6)

History: The meteorite was recovered as part of the Lost Meteorites of Antarctica project, which was funded in the UK by the Leverhulme Trust and supported by the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Manchester. These samples were collected as part of the project’s first field season in austral summer December 2018 - January 2019 by a two person field party consisting of Katherine Joy and Julie Baum. Found hlaf buried in firn. Altitude 1116 m.

Physical characteristics: Mass: 6.29 g. Pieces: 1. Dimensions: 3 × 2 × 2 cm. An irregular, grey part stone with 30% black fusion crust.

Petrography: Equilibrated texture with poorly defined chondrules (up to 1 mm in diameter). Metal and sulfide distributed throughout.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: All analyses by EPMA. Olivine Fa26.5±0.2 (N=10), Pyroxene Fs22.2±0.3Wo1.6±0.1 (N=12). Plagioclase An10.4±0.5Ab84.3±0.9Or 5.4±0.7 (N=3).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6). The silicate composition is at the limit between L and LL groups, but the magnetic susceptibility points of a metal content indicative of the L group Rochette et al. (2003).

Specimens: 5.530 g type specimen (main mass) held at NHM.
