Northwest Africa 14071 (NWA 14071)

Purchased: 2021 Apr

Classification: Lunar meteorite (feldspathic breccia)

History: Purchased by Abdelhadi Aithiba in April 2021 from nomads near the border of Libya and Algeria.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia composed of mineral clasts of anorthite (predominant), olivine (very homogeneous in composition), low-Ca pyroxene, subcalcic augite and augite in a fine grained matrix containing Ti-chromite, ilmenite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa40.4-41.6, FeO/MnO = 92-107, N = 4), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs25.1-39.8Wo4.2-7.4, FeO/MnO = 56-60, N = 3), subcalcic augite (Fs17.6Wo33.9, FeO/MnO = 50), augite (Fs17.2-19.0Wo44.4-40.0, FeO/MnO = 44-48, N = 2), anorthite (An95.8-96.3Or0.1-0.0, N = 3).

Classification: Lunar (feldspathic breccia).

Specimens: 20.5 g in the form of a polished endcut at UWB; remainder with Mr. A. Aithiba.
