Northwest Africa 14358 (NWA 14358)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Lunar meteorite (feldspathic breccia)

History: Purchased by Sean Tutorow a meteorite dealer in Morocco, February 2021.

Physical characteristics: Dark, shiny, irregular exterior, sandblasted, fusion crust absent, scattered light colored clasts also visible.

Petrography: (C. Agee and A. Ross, UNM) Reflected light microscopy shows numerous olivine and pyroxene fragments set in a feldspathic dominated groundmass. Some olivine’s show compositional zoning and some pyroxenes show exsolution lamellae. Electron microprobe analyses show the ubiquitous presence of low-Ni Fe-metal, troilite, magnetite, chromite, ilmenite, and barite.

Geochemistry: (A. Ross, UNM) Olivine Fa6.0±9.4, Fe/Mn=91±7, n=6; pigeonite Fs29.1±8.4Wo6.5±3.8, Fe/Mn=55±4, n=4; augite Fs26.8±16.7Wo30.5±14.2, Fe/Mn=50±6, n=2; plagioclase An95.9±0.3, n=4.

Classification: Lunar, feldspathic breccia

Specimens: 21.27 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Sean Tutorow holds the main mass.
