Writeup from MB 113:
Northwest Africa 5509 (NWA 5509) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2008 Nov Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL(L)3) History: Purchased by Marcin Cimala in November 2008 from a Moroccan dealer. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS, and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-defined unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 930±550 µm, N = 26) containing devitrified glass are set in a sparse matrix containing kamacite (stained by secondary Fe oxides), troilite, and chromite. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa15.2±12.3, range Fa1.0-40.5, N = 12; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.01-0.58 wt.%, mean 0.09±0.13 wt.%, N = 25), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs17.6±8.0Wo1.5±1.0, range Fs3.5-25.7Wo0.2-3.7, N = 17). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.38. Classification: Ordinary chondrite LL(L)3. LL(L) designation based on the intermediate properties, with silicate composition favoring L, but magnetic susceptibility favoring LL. Specimens: 20.2 g including one polished thin section at YPMNH; remainder with Mr. M. Cimala. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
