Northwest Africa 5892 (NWA 5892)

Purchased: 2009

Classification: Primitive achondrite (Brachinite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Brownish fragment with minor fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows an equilibrated texture of 50 to 400 µm sized olivine and subordinate low-Ca pyroxene grains that often meet at 120° grain boundaries. Minor phases include troilite and FeNi metal ocurring interstitial between and as blebby inclusions in silicate grains. Grain boundaries are often decorated with seondary Fe-oxides and -hydroxides. No plagioclase was found.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa28.7±0.3 (Fa28.1-29.0, FeO/MnO=70±8, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs9.4±0.1Wo43.9±0.2 (Fs9.2-9.6Wo43.6-44.3, FeO/MnO=33±3, n=7)
