Murzuq, Libya

Find: 2016 Mar 25

Classification: Iron meteorite (IVB)

History: (Dieter Heinlein). While prospecting for gold in the desert region of Kufra, southern Libya, a chunk of iron was found buried in a depth of about two meters. The finding site is near Egay Zuma, not far from the village of Wath, close to the border between Libya and Chad.

Physical characteristics: (Dieter Heinlein). The mass of the irregular chunk of meteoritic iron is about 450 kg, the dimensions are 94 × 47 × 45 cm.

Petrography: Iron meteorite

Geochemistry: (Xiaosong Li, FRM II). Composition of the metal obtained by using INAA: Ni = 18.2, Co = 0.79 (both in wt%), Ga = 0.21, Ir = 15.7 (both in ppm) and very low Ge.

Classification: Iron, Ataxite, IVB

Specimens: Type Specimens: 20.9 g, IfP; the main mass is with the finder.
