Writeup from MB 110:
Sayh al Uhaymir 628 (SaU 628) 20°48.176’N, 57°02.343’E Al Wusta, Oman Find: 08 Feb 2016 Classification: Ureilite History: A single complete individual was found during a search for meteorites. Physical characteristics: Dark brown rounded individual, wind-ablated, no fusion crust Petrography: (T. Burri, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) The sample consist mainly of olivine and pigeonite and shows the characteristic ureilitic texture, typical grain size is 0.8-2.0 mm. Olivine has reduced rims (width 50-100 μm) with minute Fe metal inclusions, partly oxidized due to weathering. Carbon platelets (up to 2 mm in length) consist dominantly of diamond. Silicates are weakly shocked (S2). Medium weathering, most iron metal oxidized while silicates are not affected. Geochemistry: (T. Burri, NMBE) Olivine cores Fa21.8±0.3, Fe/Mn = 45±2, Cr2O3=0.62±0.05 wt% (N = 16), reduced Ol rims have Fa>4.7. Pigeonite has Fs18.5±0.8Wo5.8±1.9, Cr2O3 1.00±0.05 wt% (N = 20). Classification: Based on texture, mineralogy and geochemistry this is an unbrecciated, monomict, ferroan ureilite. Specimens: 135.6 g including one polished thin section at NMBE, main mass: MHTO | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
