Ramlat Fasad 518        18°57.085’N, 53°26.257’E

Zufar, Oman

Find: 02 Feb 2017

Classification: Ureilite

History: A single rounded fragment was found during a search for meteorites.

Physical characteristics: Dark brown-olive wind ablated stone, 3 cm maximum dimension. A clast of 10 mm maximum dimension is visible. Some fusion crust is preserved.

Petrography: (S. Rout, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) The meteorite consists dominantly of olivine and pigeonite with characteristic ureilitic texture and indications of brecciation, primary grain size is 1-10 mm. Large regions of olivine are reduced with minute inclusions of Fe metal. All pyroxene grains (some appear to be clasts up to 10 mm) show signatures of recrystallization and contain two types of pigeonites, enstatite, augite, interstitial glass and Fe-metal grains. Primary silicate grains show low shock (S2). Carbon platelets are irregular in shape, to 1.5 mm, consist of diamond and fine-grained graphite. Medium weathering (most iron metal oxidized, silicates are unaffected).

Geochemistry: (S. Rout, Bern) Olivine cores: Fa19.4±0.3, Fe/Mn = 52±3, Cr2O3=0.64±0.03 wt% (N = 14), reduced rims have Fa = 6.2±4.8, Cr2O3=0.6±0.2 wt% (N = 18). Pigeonite cores: Fs16.3±0.2Wo11.1±0.2, Cr2O3 1.16±0.05 wt% (N = 15). Recrystallized pigeonite: Fs9.7±3.1Wo10.4±1.6 (N = 7). Augite: Fs3.7Wo32.2 (N = 1). Enstatite: Fs12.9±0.4Wo4.2±0.3 (N = 7). Glass: Na2O 2.6 wt%, CaO 4.5 wt%, Al2O3 13.6 wt%, SiO2 73.3 wt% (N = 1).

Classification: Based on texture, mineralogy and geochemistry this is a ferroan ureilite. Paired with Ramlat Fasad 517
