Writeup from MB 110:
Northeast Africa 027 (NEA 027) Libya Purchased: 2019 Dec Classification: Ureilite History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in December 2019 from a Libyan dealer. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Composed of very finely recrystallized (mosaicized) olivine and clinopyroxene (accompanied by rare larger grains) together with accessory graphite, suessite, Si-bearing kamacite, Fe metal (with trace P), troilite, Cr-bearing troilite and pentlandite. Alteration of primary metal to iron hydroxides is pervasive. Geochemistry: Olivine has reduced magnesian rims (despite the mosaicism). Olivine cores (Fa12.3-20.2, N = 4, olivine rims (Fa4.1-10.5, N = 5). Olivine contains 0.46 - 0.90 wt.% Cr2O3 and 0.20 - 0.34 wt.% CaO. Pigeonite (Fs8.1-13.5Wo8.3-6.5, N = 2), subcalcic augite (Fs4.4-9.9Wo30.3-31.8, N = 2), kamacite (Ni 3.4%, Si 3.8%). Classification: Ureilite (shock recrystallized). Interesting features include the very high degree of mosaic recrystallization of mafic silicates plus the presence of accessory suessite and Si-bearing kamacite. Specimens: 31.7 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
