The 2nd MExLab Summer school

The Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography (MIIGAiK) is organizing The 2nd International Summer school «Planetary cartography and image processing». The Summer school will be held at the MIIGAiK Extraterrestrial Laboratory (MExLab) on 25-27  June 2013, Moscow, Russia.

We have invited scientists and specialists working for different research institutes and companies from Russia, Germany and the USA to take part in the meeting: M. Kreslavsky (University of California, Santa Cruz), M. Wählisch (DLR), K. Lorentz (GEOKHI of RAS), E. Lazarev (GAISh), A. Konopikhin (MIIGAIK), A. Grechischev (Geomonitoring), A. Zubarev (Racurs), A. Ermakov (MIT) and others.

The summer school is supported by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) with the aim to develop science research methodology, to support applied works in remote sensing data processing and to implement modern analysis instruments into daily work.

The summer school will offer the 3 days of tutorials, lectures and practice.

We plan to focus on the following topics:

  • Crater identification and statistical analyses
  • Remote sensing and 3D visualization
  • Planetary GIS-mapping
  • Planetary Geomorphology
  • Phobos cartography
  • New studies of outer planets
  • Image processing of planetary data using Photomod software

The First Summer school was an interesting and successful meeting that brought together about 50 students and scientists (see http://icaci.org/extraterrestrial-lab-supporting-russian-space-program/). Lectures and practices covered different topics of planetary sciences – mapping, image processing, crater analysis, geology, geomorphology and others.

The laboratory has all necessary facilities for productive and pleasant work including modern photogrammetric hard and software.
