4^th International Workshop on LunarCubes (LCW 4) ~ Fall 2014 ~ Palo Alto, CA.

First, I’ll present the latest about LSA 4. Later in this email I’ll share updates about the 3^rd International Workshop on LunarCubes (LCW 3) that took place November 10-13 in Palo Alto, CA.

4^th International Workshop on Lunar Science Applications (LSA 4) April 2014, outside NASA KSC

LSA now stands for Lunar Science Applications with this year’s focus on Compact and Cryogenic Science and Technology Applications. Our previous focus on Lunar Superconductor Applications has been woven into a larger context per requests from you, our community.

So this year’s official title is 4^th International Workshop on Compact and Cryogenic Science and Technology Applications (LSA 4.)

LSA 4 will be a crossroads for scientist, engineers and entrepreneurs who are building and flying Lunar missions now.

After 30 years of neglect, the Moon is becoming a very active and crowded place. Russia, China and the United States currently plan to have active lander \ rover missions on the Lunar surface in 2017-18. This level of activity supports many opportunities for secondary payloads and LunarCube missions to the surface of the Moon and throughout Cislunar space with rides provided by smaller national and private programs such as the Google Lunar X Prize teams.

The Lunar Workshops series as a whole are designed to foster collaborative work among scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to solve the challenges of building hardware, software, businesses and collaborative communities involved in going back to the Moon and beyond.

Note to civil servants: You may use the conference number provided by the NCTS system to participate, register, and travel to LSA4. The NCTS conference number is 18953-14. NASA civil servants can also find it at https://ncts.nasa.gov/user/index.cfm, by searching on the dates or location for the workshop. Please note: THIS (NCTS) IS A CONFERENCE NUMBER, NOT A TRAINING NUMBER. NASA centers may or may not have funds available to support this workshop as ‘training’, and the processes for getting approval for training varies from center to center.

All our workshops support on-site and remote oral presentations and audience participation. This means you can present, observe presentations and participate in Q&A sessions and our interactive Design Challenges whether you’re in your room or ours.

As a part of the series, LSA 4 will bring together world-class researchers and experts to deliver progress updates on the latest discoveries and opportunities in Lunar Science. The program will include technical presentations on lander and rover technology and cryogenic planetary science and processes. Expert presenters will discuss the latest results from the LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter), the LCROSS (Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite) and the LADEE (Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer) programs. Members of the Astrobotic, MoonExpress, Luna, and Resource Prospector teams will provide updates on the progress of their missions. The list of topics planned demonstrates the high level of expertise at the conference:

LSA 4 is the anchor event for a week of activities in and around the Kennedy Space Center including the 43^rd Space Congress sponsored by Canaveral Council of Technical Societies (CCTS), Yuri’s Night, tours of local space facilities, and a banquet co-sponsored by the Missile, Space and Range Pioneers, a member of CCTS.
