James Webb Space Telescope Takes First Selfie

Cryogenic testing of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) last week included a self-portrait to check the alignment of all optics and to demonstrate that the individual mirror segments can be properly aligned to each other and to the rest of the system. This imaging occurred in vacuum Chamber A at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where the JWST is tested and operated under conditions that simulate the space environment in which it will operate. Verifying the optics as a system is an important step to ensure that the telescope will work correctly in space. READ MORE »
