Black Marble Nightlight

Black Marble

In a recent article, a group led by Miguel Roman at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center reports on its work and subsequent release of the Earth’s nighttime lights product suite. NASA’s Black Marble nighttime lights product suite (VPN46) is available at 500-m resolution and is generated by a routine global-processing algorithm using data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Platform (SNPP). Roman et al. discuss the scientific utility of the products, which includes an evaluation of temporal patterns associated with urbanization, socioeconomic variability, cultural characteristics, and displaced populations affected by conflict. (As a NASA product, the image is automatically freely available. This article is open access.)
