36. Point Source Dust Storm

In the high Andes of Argentina the prevailing westerly winds pick up dust from the surface in frequent dust storms. In this photograph white gypsum crystal particles have been picked up from the margin of the salt lake, Salar de Arizaro. Separate streams of pinkish dust can also be traced. This is a fine-grained pink dust from eroded Tertiary sedimentary rocks deposited by alluvial fans at the surface.
