Introduction

I have always longed to “know” our planet — its people, places, landscapes, and ways of working. Books were my first vehicles of exploration, then backpacks, jeeps, research ships, airplanes, and now — unbelievable! — space shuttles. My most treasured spaceflight memento is the feeling of awe and wonder I gained from those magical moments at the windows, where my lifelong familiarity with Earth's features meets the amazing panorama of an orbital view. All of us who have the privilege of seeing our planet in this way search for means of sharing it with our fellow Earthlings. This series of space shuttle slides is an excellent contribution to that effort.
