Ishtar Terra

The majority of Ishtar Terra, an unusual highland region, is shown here in a stereographic projection centered at 66°N, 340°E. Ishtar Terra contains the only elevated plateau on the planet, Lakshmi Planum. The plateau sits ~3.5 kilometers above the mean planetary radius and is ringed by mountain belts. The highest mountain belt, Maxwell Montes, sits at the end of the “handle” on Lakshmi Planum and rises 10.7 kilometers above the mean planetary radius. The following airplane view of Maxwell Montes is taken looking southeast from a point slightly north of where the northern edge of the handle meets the remainder of Lakshmi Planum.
