The yardangs in this frame are the remnants of a layer of erodible material. Burial and exhumation of a surface by the wind adds difficulty in using crater populations to determine its age. (See the LPI slide set Stones, Wind, and Ice: A Guide to Martian Impact Craters for more information regarding martian craters and age dating.) Note the cluster of yardangs within the exhumed crater in the lower right corner of the frame; the crater rim serves to provide partial protection from aeolian erosion.
