EXPLORATION OF THE PLANETS

The 3-D images in this collection are possible because of spacecraft and human exploration of space. As of 1997, we have landed on only three celestial bodies. Humans walked on the Moon during the Apollo missions (1969-1972), bringing back thousands of photographs, including many stereo images. Spacecraft have landed on Venus and Mars. The Soviet Venus landers did not have 3-D capabilities, but both the Viking landers (1976) and Mars Pathfinder lander (1997) returned stereo images of the surface of Mars. This page features stereo views constructed or processed from images selected from these missions.
